Most Christians know the Psalms are special. Even if we can't quite put our finger on why, we sense it. So what makes this book so unique? Here are five reasons.

  1. The Psalms are a "Little Bible"

The Psalms reveal the heart of God. They sit at the very center of Christian theology: They predict and prophesy the death and resurrection of Jesus. They describe His kingdom and the nature of the Church. They also show us God's forgiveness and salvation apart from anything we do.

Luther called the Psalms an enchiridion — a handbook, a compendium of the whole Bible. Think of them as a "Sparknotes" version of the entire Bible. If you don't have time to read everything, read the Psalms. You'll learn what you need to know.

  1. The Psalms Reveal the Heart

When you read about the saints in other books, you learn what they did. That's good to learn, to be sure. But the Psalms go further. they record what the saints said, and specifically what they said to God in prayer.

Speech sets us apart from the rest of creation. And Jesus tells us in Luke 6:45 that "out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks." That means words are a direct window into what's going on inside of you. So the Psalms don't just reveal the heart of God. They reveal the heart of man.

  1. The Psalms Speak to Real Life

Luther described the human heart like a ship on a stormy sea. Our hearts drift. One moment we're gripped by fear and grief, the next we're lifted by hope and joy. The Psalms are relevant because they come from actual human hearts living actual human lives.

That's why they're useful no matter what you're going through. Slow down, pay close attention to the word. I promise that you'll feel like they were written just for you. The Psalms aren't academic or ivory-tower. They're the most practical book in the Bible because they speak to real life.

  1. The Psalms Unite Us To One Another

The Psalms remind you that you're not alone. When you read them, you're standing alongside Christians from every corner of the world and every era of history who have walked through the same things you're walking through. When you read and sing the Psalms, you're singing the same songs across different times and places.

On top of that, the Psalms ground you. They keep your own feelings from pulling you away from the truth. They keep you from drifting away from the Church. They anchor you into the Body of Christ.

  1. The Psalms Show You Yourself

The Psalms are a mirror. They give you a true picture of who you really are. This is genuine self-knowledge. To put it bluntly, you don't really know yourself unless you know what God's Word says about you. The Psalms are the best and most beautiful place to learn that.

Conclusion

Make time not just to read the Psalms, but to mark them, study them, and memorize them. They really are a priceless gift. don't take them for granted. Learn to love them. Make them your own.

May God bless your study of His Word, and lead you to pray and sing praises to the Lord. Amen.
